Nice to meet you all.

I've been trying to make games since the age of 10. I tried on a lot of different occasions, and it got me into programming.
Now I'm working as webdeveloper, with languages as Ruby, Elixir and Coffeescript.

Since a year I'm trying to make a game again, using HTML 5 technologies.
The goal is a SNES era like 2D sidescrolling shooter, playable with keyboard/gamepad. It should feel a bit nostalgic '80s style, but mixed with modern game design. I want the game to be directly playable in browsers. At the moment it is not playable on tablets/phones because I'm not sure what the best approach could be for touch controls. I'm also trying to make the game one seamless experience, without any loading screens, so each stage is going seamless into the next.

I try to do the whole development proces as open as possible, and most of it by myself.
I use http://craftyjs.com/ as framework for my development, all code of my project is Open Source and located here: https://github.com/matthijsgroen/game-play
I do all graphics myself, and use GIMP as drawing program.

I notice the problem I'm struggling with the most is game design. What makes the game fun? a lot of time it is tweaking numbers. I try to learn a lot from good gamasutra articles (about level design, enemy design, bossfight design) but most of them are not really focused on the Shmup genre.

I hope in joining this forum that I meet more people that could help test my game and give good advice/pointers ideas for game design!

You can find/play my game in progress here: http://speedlazer.net

Yes, a RPS or compo would be fun. Have some projects to finish up first but once I'm done I'd (try to) be all in.

If you are working on a "real" shmup such as Ikaruga I think you should have NO UPGRADES at all, Ikaruga relies on that color swaping scheme and all you can collect is energy for powering up the secondary weapon, but you necer actually upgrade it.

Problem is, such a game relies a lot in level design everything must be perfect or it´s going to be a complete failure, I can´t remember any modern game that works, except Ikaruga.

Axelay is a good example, yes, no power-ups, but you loose the selected weapon each time you take a hit.

On the other hand, if you are doing something to the mobile market, specially a "free" game and expect to make some bucks out of advertising, you need a powerups store and force the player to repeat a lot of times each level to increase her weapons (or pay for IAPs)

That´s what I did on the game I did, it´s not really something I´m proud of, but it works.

G-type
Nemesis Online (this one is still incomplete, but is totally playable)
Salamander NG (not a very good game...)
Unnoficial Salamander 3

I have seen on youtube clones and fangames of Gradius and Nemesis that were abandoned before any release.

So...

If someone has already played Super Mario Bros X, you know how crazy funny is to have a fangame with a level editor.

Last year I was trying to make a Gradius/R-type fangame in Clickteam Fusion, but I gave up due to lack of motivation, procrastination and lack of skill and knowledge with this engine. I wasn't planning a level editor on CTF. I got this idea recently, ~4 months after giving up. I want to make a fangame like SMBX, but with Gradius and R-type. I think that CTF isn't for me. I started studying programming languages some months ago, and I think that Unity is good for me, but I'm not sure what I will use now...

Thanks for reading all my boring story

I have this idea... but I'd like to know whether something similar already exists before I rush head first in dev. So I'm asking for your help, wise shmup experts!

Is there some kind of PvP shmup fighting game somewhere? There would be a spacecraft on the left of the screen, another one on the right, and they would try to kill each other. What's on my mind is something like , but instead of ChunLi vs Raiden, that would be Nemesis vs R-Type, or ForgottenWorld vs Defender...

I would proobably make it with Löve lua framework...

Does it already exist? Is it worth working on such a thing? Is 2D enough?

i am Vas

I'am mainly 2D/3D ''artist'' but i enjoy learning new subjects. I am trying to learn a programming on my own via you tube and tutorial's (almost impossible) .

I did start a 3d race game some beta footage on my you tube channel i use to share with friends https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCjdSpE ... UgWiohucBQ . I stopped working on it due to Unity engine bugs and lack of direction.

Shumps have only in last say 3 years become a genre i enjoy playing, i have built up a large collection since and like to attempt one myself.

Looking forward to exploring the forum.

If i can help in anyway hit me up

But, as mentioned, no horror gameplay elements, just the plot and setting.

Hello SHMUP developers, it's Paul Hack (@indiegamehunt) from Game Jolt and I want to let you all know about the game jam we're running.

In a nutshell, you'll have 72 hours to make a game with a scoreboard using the Game Jolt API. The theme will be announced when the jam starts. I can't tell you what it is, but I can tell you that I am highly confident it will be well-received by SHMUP lovers.

PewDiePie, Markiplier, and Jacksepticeye will be playing the top 5 games as voted by the community.

Gamers will compete for high scores in the winning games, with the best scores displayed on the jam homepage.

The jam runs from July 17-20 (12:00AM Eastern Time).

All the details are on the Indies vs Gamers jam homepage:

You can test out API integration now so you don't have to worry about learning it during the jam:

We're involving gamers as well as devs in hopes of getting indie gaming more well known by the general gaming community.

I hope to see you there =]

I'm the co-founder of the online project management tool called Casual.
(casual.pm)

Casual is a super intuitive way to manage your tasks and projects online. Casual organizes your tasks as visual flows of actions with dependencies. Planning a project is like drawing it on a flip chart or piece of paper.

I would like for you to give Casual a shot and give us some valuable feedback after doing so. We have a 14-day trial period during which you can try out all of our features for free!

Also, our project is absolutely free for educational institutions and students. You can use Casual to streamline the educational process, as well as organize projects at your institution and in the community.

Looking forward to hearing your feedback.

Drop me a line at nick(at)casual.pm. I’d be more than happy to answer any of your

There's also a camp of players that don't like upgrades, because fully-upgraded weapons tend to be very powerful, while un-upgraded weapons tend to be too weak (especially if you've upgraded fully and died, losing all your upgrades). This part does drive me nuts as I'm trying to strike a balance between upgrades being significant, while not being a necessity. But then, why upgrade at all? I think it's cooler to upgrade, but the design balance is making things difficult.

I'm working on a shmup, and we're reaching a point where we need to think about weapon selection and upgrade design.

Here are a couple common ones:

Weapon upgrades via killing enemies (enemies may release collectable orbs, fill up a bar, etc):
Such as Geometry Wars, Self Destruct, Ikaruga (bombs can be collected via killing enemies), Jamestown (bombs can be collected via killing enemie)

Weapon upgrades based on picking up a power up dropped in the field
Super Stardust (bombs too), PixelJunk Shooter, Rez (bombs too), Tatsujin (bombs too), Geometry Wars (bomb detonates on touch)

Weapons selection based on picking up an orb (usually dropped by random or specific colored enemies) - unfortunately, can cause some players to pick up weapons they DID NOT want to pick up.
Tasujin, Robo-kid

Weapons selection via controller - all weapons available during play
Thunder Force, Super Stardust, Dead Nation, Hellfire

Weapons selection based on selecting specific ships
Jamestown, R-Type, Silpheed (haven't played this, but heard out of many weapons, you can only choose two for your ship)

What other weapons upgrade and selection design have I missed?
What types of upgrades/selection do you like? What don't you like and why?

Unfortunately I haven't made a proper shmup since switching to Unity or I'd post the source here. I hope to get onto one after my current game. You could take a look at the global game site, and filter for Unity games. Entries to this competition include the full source code:
