Shining Storm

Written in C++ with DirectX.  It will be much more awesome than the above screenie.

I will post a playable demo when I consider the game playable.

Re: Shitstorm

Any chance you could rename the title to something more suitable for a broader audiance?

Re: Shining Storm

Well, that took a while

Controls:
Use arrow keys to manipulate the orbital and to move.
Shoot with Z.
F1 is not useful except in debugging, F2 shows framerate, and F3 shows hitboxes.

There are many problems at the moment.  Most of them are going to be fixed in the next few days, but please point them out anyway.  I will give you a metaphorical cookie if you find one I don't know about.

EDIT: I wanted to do a lot more and it was buggy.  Here's the final version.

eek! That sounds bad, it's not quite the same at 23fps...  Yes, BulletML

My next project is a Nintendo DS homebrew bullet hell game, and I think I'll use a slightly modified version of BulletML that specifies bullet type in the document and allows access to the index of loops (something like <param type="sequence">)

Shining Storm was made with a group, though.

Re: Shining Storm

It ran too slow on my computer for me to get a good opinion about the game. The graphics looked very original, I'll give you that. The whole game was like looking at moving concept art of a space shooter. My only gripe is that the sprites felt very stiff. I loved how the plane shot out cartridges when you fired, though!

Unfortunately I can't comment much on the gameplay. It seemed as if it'd be quite challenging if it ran faster, and the bullet patterns looked nice. Good job  Smiley

Re: Shining Storm

artist for shining storm checking in.  i enjoy reading the comments about the game, both from other contestants and 2bears in his blog at http://www.the2bears.com/?p=880

here are some extra screenshots (with the ugly HUD cropped out -- i never got around to doing a proper HUD):

hope more of you check out the game.  i did all the art for this game within about a week and a half (staying up quite late for those days Tongue) so it's a bit rushed.  i love all the feedback.

Re: Shining Storm

Am I right in thinking that there are only two waves of enemies in this? the big ship in the pictures being the last?

Re: Shining Storm

the game isn't super long, but it's definitely more than that wave and the boss.  why don't you play it?

Re: Shining Storm

Thats all I get as well, one wave, boss then nothing.  The game doesn't stop but nothing else comes on screen either.

Re: Shining Storm

ah i was assuming you were thinking there's only the ONE wave and boss shown in the screenshots.  yeah it's short Undecided.  we had a longer level but we ditched it when sharpobject had done better bullet patterns.

Re: Shining Storm

Right, thanks for clearing that up. It's a shame that you didn't have time to add some more enemies, i would have like to have seen more of the pretty bullet patterns.

Cheers

Re: Shining Storm

yeah i think we got caught up with other stuff.  you might see some improvements down the line, but i think sharpobject will be moving on to his DS project -- i'm no programmer, but i should be able to throw together some cool levels and bullet patterns.  no idea when that would ever happen though -- i'll be tied up with other game projects for a while.

here's a teaser of an enemy that didn't make it into the game Tongue

Re: Shining Storm

Please look at reply #11... There is more than one wave of enemies.

I had commented them out in the xml file and submitted an archive with them commented out.  Follow the instructions in reply #11 to see the other waves.  I didn't want to resubmit the file because it was a couple minutes after the deadline.

Re: Shining Storm

i sent some PMs around.  hope everyone gets a chance to play the whole level.  to clarify, here's a video of a playthrough --

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=1443847841320073701&hl=en

your version will have different colored bullets and i think the boss is tweaked some, but other than that i think they're identical.

edit: and a bad playthrough to see what can happen if you don't kill stuff quite as quickly -  http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-2856369688328642689
