Re: Questions and answers

Speaking of which, is there already an "ad kit" ready for the competitors to use? We probably need to standardize the set of images to be used for the splash screens.

...or is this already out and did I just miss it?

Re: Questions and answers

...and to follow up pixelizr's question, just a reminder (I think motorherp asked for one a few months ago) to ask the sponsors to supply their banners in 8-bit web palette (hopefully not animated) as well as what some of them are in now, for those of us still using 256 colours. Is it only me?

Re: Questions and answers

Hi,

Just checking back on the rules and it mentions the first thing your game does it show the sponsors. I'm using GM, is it ok to show the sponsors image after the GM loading bar + background are complete? In GM terms I'm thinking of making the sponsors screen the first room of the game, if that makes sense. Just wanted to be sure on the off chance I finish my game Smiley

Cheers,
LW.

If the game creation program you use forces its own splash screen then its ok to have the sponsors displayed after this.

@Pixelizr and Linely.  This hasn't been done yet since at the time I was waiting on other potential sponsors.  I dont think we'll be getting any new sponsors now though so I'll work on finalising the splash screen banners.

Re: Questions and answers

Hmmm... as Linley mentioned, I think it would be better if the advertisers would provide their banners in multiple colordepths. Otherwise, competitors would have to resample them according to their games' specs, thus making things unpredictable.

As for the "no animated banners" thing, I wholeheartedly agree. Static images for maximum compatibility and minimum development headache. Grin

Re: Questions and answers

@motorherp, you can customize the 'forced' GM loading bar and screen to be whatever image(s) you like btw. I did consider using the loading backdrop as the sponsor image but then it may not be totally visible and/or around for the 5 seconds, so if with all this in mind GM folk can display it after the loading stuff then cool. Ta,

Re: Questions and answers

Oh, btw for any other GM users, there is a built in splash screen function in the Pro version: splash_show_image("my_file.png",5000);

update: ah looks like using the GM splash function you can hit escape to avoid waiting 5 seconds... guess that isn't allowed?

Re: Questions and answers

Quote
* All games must display the shmup-dev competition banner and all sponsors banners on a splash screen which must be the first thing your game displays and must be displayed for a period of at least 5 seconds.  The banners will be available for download from the SPONSORS AND PRIZES section of the forum.  Please take care to check this before submitting your final game since banners might change and new banners might get added.  Any game violating this rule will be disqualified.

-Where is the shmup-dev competition banner? Not at the SPONSORS AND PRIZES section of the forum.

-What about animated banners? Can we display the subimage we think fits best, or does it need to be animated in game too?

-How much can we resize these banners?

-Is it okay if we slightly modify these banners in order to be able to make a better looking splash screen?

Re: Questions and answers

Some of these questions have already been answered.  Since its unlikely we'll be getting any new sponsors at this stage I'm now going to finalise the banners, which will include the shmup-dev compo banner.  In the finalised versions the Play-Asia banner will not be animated.  The banners are supplied by our sponsors and you may not modify them in any way.

Re: Questions and answers

Nice, hope to have the finalised banners soon.

You still didn't answer my 'resize' question. When you say "not modify them in any way", well, resizing is a way of modifying that should definately be allowed, since those banners are too big for most games to be able to display in a splash screen.

I think that the best solution to this would be you (the organizers) creating a splash screen that everyone can use, in different sizes.

Re: Questions and answers

Ah yes sorry.  My modify I mean you cant change the graphics or anything like that.  If you must resize that is fine as long as the quality is still high.

Re: Questions and answers

Thanks for answering so fast, motorherp!

So, when will the banners be finalised? Can we decide how to display them or will the organization create a splash screen? Can a key be used to let the player skip the 5 seconds thing? I bet not many would like to go though 5 secs of splash screen every time they start the game.

When they're finalised.  Should be a quick job put I've not found the time to do it yet.

Yes you can display them how you want, whether that's just a static splash screen or something fancy.  We'll only be providing you with the banners.

The player might not like it, but the sponsors wouldn't like it the other way.  Splash screens must be non skippable if we're going to continue to entice great sponsors and prizes in future competitions

Re: Questions and answers

Are future non-contest versions of my game required to have the splash screen? Or can just the one I submit to the contest have it? The version I am planning on finishing afterwards is going to be a much fuller game and I'd rather not annoy people with 5 secs of ads...(though I'm planning on showing it during load anyway)

Re: Questions and answers

Anything you do outside of the competition we have no control over so there's no need to include the ads.

Re: Questions and answers

Hey motorherp, I see you finalised the sponsors' banners, nice! I just can't find the competition banner, is it somewhere on this site or has it not been finished yet?

Re: Questions and answers

For the time being assume there isn't a competition banner.  Unfortunately my home computer has broken down at the moment so I dont think I'll be able to make one soon.  If it takes too long I'll just not bother with one rather than forcing people to make changes in the last couple weeks.

Re: Questions and answers

So, my game runs in 320*200 resolution, the banners will not fit on one screen.  What I've done is made it scroll - is this acceptable?  The user is subjected to banners for five seconds, but no individual banner is onscreen for the full five seconds.

If this isn't okay, can I resize them instead?

Re: Questions and answers

I would have thought that this would be ok. Or maybe you could have them scrolling up the screen?

Cheers

Re: Questions and answers

I think that a thread could be created by the administration where all completed entries are listed, with a download link and maybe a screenshot or too. Should help judges and... well, should help everyone, I think. =)

Re: Questions and answers

@Five Damned Dollarz - Ah yes forget about that.  Unfortunately it doesn't actualy say shmup-dev on it anywhere and its a bit late to be changing the rules now :/.

@brog - Yes scrolling or resizing is ok as long as the quality is acceptable.

@BMF - All in good time my man.  Its not over just yet.

I don't plan to push the time I can work on mygame to the limit, but timezones can differ 12 hours, so what timezone are we talking about here?

Also, where can I find the competition banner...

Re: Questions and answers

No competition banner, jaj. (I just used some text, but I read you can use nothingness too)

About timezones, it would be nice to know. I think I'll have to push it to the limit if I want to finish one more boss, actually. ^_^

The timestamp shown at the top right of the Shmup-Dev forums can be used as reference.
