Awesome! I'll be expecting a lot. And don't forget the final polish this time! I think that's the only reason your space invaders clone never got the attention it deserved  tongue2

TehSilentOne made a Space Invaders clone?  Sorry for proving Cactus' point, but I haven't heard of it.

Re: BW-BG!`

Yeah, he sure did. It was a actually one of many sources of inspiration for Clean Asia! I really like the ideas in it, very fresh and original. Best Space Invader clone that I've ever played, that's for sure.

I must admit, Clean Asia does share some similarities with NVaders.  The game looks fun.

alright..

i took Cactus's idea of a fractal-ized shooter, and took 'tree' as the literal thing.  i want worms crawling around in it.. apples falling.. other.. 'tree' things..  Roll Eyes

*working on more interesting trees atm*

Re: BW-BG!`

TehSilentOne, the screenshots for your contest project here are simple-looking in colors, yet interesting in a sense!  And that huge tree-like thing sounds very promising as well!!!  wink2=b

I’d say you’re off and running, and make sure you add some options, too!!!  Grin !

Re: BW-BG!`

That’s looking awesome Smiley, really interesting stuff going on there. I can't wait to see what the gameplay is like. So are all the enemies going to come from the tree or is the tree the actual enemy? You could take the enemy hive thing literally and have bee hives that release killer bees until they are destroyed  Tongue.

Nice concept, very original.  The original tree design reminds me of what happens when you plant a seed and water it in this game:

Re: BW-BG!`

ok.. haven't had much time to work at all on this. (*damn job.. ^___^), but i've made a little progress.

http://www.willhostforfood.com/files/83564/tree.exe

gimme framerate issues, and any other c&c you have to throw at me. currently, im wavering from 26-30 fps, with it capped at 30 for stability, but i know i can trim that a little bit.

I still have to make the patterns interesting, but whatever. Imma add the option(s?) next.. they will be optained by keeping alive the larger regrown limbs.

Re: BW-BG!`

What are your recommended system requirements? It runs at around 10 fps on a Thinkpad X31 (1.6GHz Pentium M with a 16MB low-end Radeon), and drops to 1 fps when the "Biomass Online!" appears. If I may pitch in a comment, I know my PC isn't the newest one out there, but I think the frame rate shouldn't be that slow basing on the visuals I currently see. Of course, I have no idea on what kind of computing power is required to generate that regenerating tree, so... Smiley

Re: BW-BG!`

23-24 fps here, on my older laptop.  It's a 1.73GHz Pentium M, with 1GB and an ATI Mobility Radeon X300.  It's not new, but then again it was still able to do 60 fps with the very intense fluid dynamics of Riders on the Storm... so I'd look around for something that's causing the slowdown.

Re: BW-BG!`

TehSilentOne, I found myself having a WHOLE lot of great fun with your demo so far, and I absolutely love the action so far... and I even got a rush at dodging the many lasers while shooting off the tree and its branches and leaves that grow back!!!  Most awesome work so far!!!  d=Grin=b !

The one thing that needs fixing though is this error message that I got as I delved deeper and deeper into the game:

Quote
___________________________________________
ERROR in
action number 1
of  Step Event
for object fractal:

In script fractal_step:
In script limb_position:
Error in code at line 1:
   global.lx = lx;

at position 13: Unknown variable lx

...and if you can overcome that, you are *well* on your way towards being one of the stand-out contenders in this competition!!  Keep up the great work, my man TehSilentOne!!!  Wink !!

(By the way, your demo ran 25-30fps on my computer so far.  Good start on the frame rate!!  Cool )

Re: BW-BG!`

alright then. Smiley

@pizelizr: i was testing this with some pals of mine, and i think the problem is your 16mb.

@Adigun: thanks for the support! I'll see if i can't recreate that error, because i had it before and believed i fixed it. Tongue

@the2bears: that would be my very unoptimized code. ^___^ I'll be working on that for a while, indeed..

Re: BW-BG!`

Yeah, i'm getting about 16 fps steady. But i can run a bunch of blending and particles in GM on my system. 2.26 GHz P4, 128mb Radeon.

Are you using gamemaker's precision collision detection on each segment of the tree thing?

17 FPS average 5 minutes into the game, shooting like a maniac.

256 mb Radeon 9550

Did you mention the controls? I found that the A button shoots something, apparently.

Re: BW-BG!`

Boy, way to figure that out, Kairos... it is definitely the “A” key that fires indeed.  I thought it was the “Z” key that does that at first, but I for one had absolutely no problems with the current firing key myself, and that is good news right there!!  grin2=b

I played it earlier and it’s great. Sorry I can't remember what frame rate I got, but it seemed smooth enough to me. Hope you don't have too much trouble with the speed.

Seriously, I was not using that as sarcasm, Kairos... I was actually using it as an encouraging means to say, “I agree with you”.  That is what I meant, and so I apologize for any trouble I might have caused by saying that one.  Now do you understand?  Smiley !

(By the way, I do not do sarcasm myself because that is *not* part of my very nature.  That is all.  wink1 )

Re: BW-BG!`

The demo now runs at a playable 15 fps on my PC, and I can now see why it runs so slowly. First, the game is in 1024x768 resolution (I didn't notice this earlier), and second, there is a very liberal amount of alphablended effects.

Seems to run a steady 30fps here... actually, seemed to run at 60 fine except it was I that coudn't keep up with those white homing shots Smiley  Looking good, though, I'm liking this one.
