T.M.R's Entry Vinculum (done)

Go on then, i've been meaning to join in on these since the first one...

i've got some prototype code going already (started it last night, based on a few basic control routines) and the idea is dead simple; it's a stock vertical blaster up until the player shoots a nasty, that causes it to explode into a ring of bullets which can kill both the player and other nasties. The idea is to fire as little as possible and let the chain reactions do the bulk of the work and i plan to include a chain counter that also acts as score multiplier.

S'got a name already, i'm calling it Vinculum, partly because it's nice and spacey but mostly since it means "that which unites or binds" - like a chain. =-)

Re: T.M.R's Entry

That sounds promising, though I could see large chain reactions producing dense clouds of bullets flying in every direction.  I guess that's the risk part for which the score multiplier is the reward.   Grin

That's how i'm hoping it'll pan out, players will have to balance the risk of leaving waves of nasties a little longer and having the bullets a little closer together to rack the score up.

Re: T.M.R's Entry

Hokey cokey, here's how Vinculum looks so far;

Since it's a bit... erm cluttered, i'll explain what has happened; there were originally seven nasties in a row, i've shot the lefthand one and it detonated, peppering the one to it's right and destroying that and so on - the wave of explosions is about to spew bullets into the righthand nasty and toast that too. Y'can see the first rings of bullets erupting from the explosions as well, they have to be dodged (but it's deliberately generous on the collisions for those events).

The explosion effect is really beautiful! Can't wait to try this one Smiley
By the way, what are you using to develop this?

i've had to dial the power down on the explosions a little because they were obscuring the waves a little too much - they still look pretty nice, though. i added the bulk of the framework too, all i plan to do now is put in a few more waves and some front end stuff for selecting fullscreen or windowed mode and i'll release a preview for everyone to have a blast of.

By the way, what are you using to develop this?

It's all done with Blitz Max.

Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved 2 has a bit of a problem with that.  It's very easy to lose track of enemies amidst the spectacular fireworks display of glowing particles.  Smiley

Re: T.M.R's Entry

Hokey cokey, i've got a release version of Vinculum ready to go; head over to my still-not-finished site at www.BulletMechanics.com and there are some instructions and a link to the download. Yay! Here's a better screenshot from after i changed the screen ratio a bit and toned down the explosions as well. =-)

What i'm considering at the moment is turning it into a full shareware title, adding backgrounds, levels, loads more attackers and waves, difficulty levels and so forth... either way i'm really pleased with the results, hope you lot like it too. =-)

Re: T.M.R's Entry

For completeness sake, would you mind uploading a copy here once it's your "final" session version?  I realize the tone of these sessions is very informal, it's just easier for everyone to have a version for the voting.

Oops, didn't realise there was the option to do that... hokey cokey, this is the same zip and contains the instructions (assuming the upload works over our LAN =-)
