Session 5 Announcement

All right, the next session will be starting this coming Monday, so expect the theme to be up on Sunday evening (PST).

Start Date : October 6th, 2008
End Date : October 20th, 2008

Theme : Air and Land.

In most shooters the difference between Air based targets and those that are Land based is at most moving vs. stationary enemies.  Try to expand this into something more.  Examples might be Xevious, or Scramble (I'm sure there are newer ones, chime in if you have some).  Are there things to try out regarding the player's ship?  I'm wondering about Spy Hunter, or maybe even Moon Patrol?  Or even some other, completely different take on the theme?

Re: Session 5 Announcement

Theme's been posted.  I hope it's different enough from some in the past to encourage some great ideas.

Re: Session 5 Announcement

I really don't get the theme, we're expanding on the concept of Land vs. Air enemies/player vehicles/ships?

Any of those or all of those.  There are no strict rules here, remember?  If you have an idea that you think fits "Air and Land" then run with it.  Different enemies, or different player ships, or something else entirely.  I was only suggesting an approach on how to think about this.

Re: Session 5 Announcement

Well, I'm not promising anything due to me only having been learning Game Maker for a week, but I'll try and put together and entry. Here's some ideas that may spark others to come up with something:

- Combine a typical bullet-hell shooter with sections that require accurate navigation through an environment e.g. caves, but no shooting (or limited shooting)

- Block the player's way with land, requires use of bullets/bombs to clear a way through

- Change your ship into a land based vehicle at the push of a button, different controls, different challenge, but still a shooter

- Dual player control - you control either a ship or a vehicle, the other is AI and you can switch between the two, or forget the AI and it is an exclusively 2-player game

- If you can use "land" to mean "water under land" then have your ship dive into water, modify the controls accordingly and offer different enemy types

- Just do a basic shooter with ground based enemies, then add a bomb weapon to your craft and design the levels so the use of the bombs is integral to your survival and taking out certain enemies

- You could actually do a "protect the bases" style shooter. You have a stationary cannon to protect buildings on the ground. Atatcks come from the air...

Hope those spark some ideas for you guys.

Re: Session 5 Announcement

Long time no see  Wink I'd really like to participate in this one because I have a nice idea wich would be quite easy to pull off: a bullet hell shooter inspired by Ikaruga. In the air, bullets from land-enemies can't hit you, on the ground, bullets above of you are harmless. There also would be some enemies who fire homing missiles that can hit you in land and air mode.
So, I'd really like to try this one out, but unfortunately (well, not really) next week I am starting research for my first commercial project  Grin
...but who knows, maybe it grabs me by the weekend. Stay tuned Wink

Re: Session 5 Announcement

you forgot to name dodonpachi and whatnot as example. there is land an air units too, though the interaction comes down to no colision with ground units and shooting everything on screen  Grin

Re: Session 5 Announcement

DoDonPachi uses the "standard" shmup approach to land versus air, with the only distinction being speed (ground units move slower) and collision (ground units and air units don't collide).  The distinction is otherwise not that important because the player ship's weaponry hits both ground and air, and shots fired by both ground and air units can hit the player ship.

The idea here is to push the distinction more strongly and see what people come up with. A number of shmups give the player ship separate air-to-air and air-to-ground attacks (Xevious, Alpha Mission, Alpha Mission 2, and more) to emphasize the difference between air and ground targets.

Re: Session 5 Announcement

I have an idea but I don't have enough time to work on it so I didn't enter this session Sad  I'll play all the entries and leave feedbacks. So, good luck everyone!

Re: Session 5 Announcement

I apologise if this is already written down somewhere in these forums, but what actual time tomorrow do we have to submit our games?

Also what time zone is the time for? I am in the UK, so 5pm EST is actually, 10pm here for example.

I just want to make sure I get my entry ready in time. Also, from looking at past sessions you just want a zip file attached to a post with the executable in right?

thanks

That's correct, sometime in the evening (PST) is when I usually get mine finished and in Smiley

Re: Session 5 Announcement

Thanks, that means I'm 8 hours ahead so anything up to 8am Tuesday morning is theoretically ok  Grin but hopefully I won't need to use all that time.
