Space Pirate 'entre chien et chat' WIP

Hi Folks!

I'm working on a 3D vertical shmup with a 'raystorm view' since one year,
it is my first try to complete a game, i'v only do a 2D horizontal/vertical engine for game maker before.

You'll find system info, story and some screenshoots on my pretty new site (it's in french sorry, but feel free to post in english on site or forum)

I'll post more screenshoots and video here very soon, i wish to see a demo out in 2-3 months, depend of work...you all know what it is...

Space Pirate 'entre chien et chat'/Space Pirate 'between cat and dog'
Screenshoots:
http://gyanosideb.power-heberg.com <- under construction

Thanks for reading. (sorry for my poor english Wink )

Re: Space Pirate 'entre chien et chat' WIP

Hi guys, thank you for your interest Smiley

I thought making a video tonight, but this morning cheking my sources, i thought that I could improve some movements of enemy ships to make them more fluid (x-axis rotation if move to left or right), the script is finished I add this to all vessels right now. So I would do the video tomorrow.
I also do my best to finish a demo quick as possible with the first 3 stages. (1-1 to 1-3)

Thank you Sovmax.

Well there is a light (39Mo) video from the start of stage 1-1 to the middle.
finally i used Fraps then Adobe Premiere pro for final avi divx format. Thanks for the advise.

I hope you can get a better idea of the game.

I'm working hard on the demo wich will include the full stage 1  'Cloudy escape' (1-1 Sea zone, 1-2 Sky zone, 1-3 Stratosphere zone)

WOW! Impressive!!

It's looking really nice! I like how smooth huge ships move. Very atmospheric! Score+

Wouldn't be nicer to have some sort of fog so these two bosses don't look like they are at your same altitude? Just my opinion though.

Keep up the great work!  Wink

Thanks for report.

About the altitude, there is a soft silver fog and a script who draw the 3D models darker at low atlitude, it look like the function is unable on the big black ship (just forget to put it back to on before doing the vid), then the vid isnt very good and some details are lost, anyway i 'll still aware about it.

Just remenber me if you got the same feeling on demo Wink

Re: Space Pirate 'entre chien et chat' WIP

Hi there, after some mistakes with my connection, i finally upload a wip of my game,
the file is a 7z format (6,43Mo, no BGM for now) and include a README.txt file with some 'vital' info.

Before you download it, you have to know that you need a pad or a stick to play
(anyone with 6 buttons will be fine, ps2,xbox,dreamcast,pc,another...)
http://www.zshare.net/download/545834-> obsolete no more available

Thanks in advance for report, i think the demo can be out in 2-3 months.

As it goes, I don't know which converter you were using for the PS2 pad, but... well, it didn't seem to work so well with either of the pads I have.

The XBox one was the least useful; the up and down of the left-stick controlled the left and right movement of the ship, while up and down movement was controlled by the right and left triggers respectively. Only the Y/Yellow (top-most of the four) button seemed to do anything, being normal-fire (and getting me through the menus).

The other pad I have is a Thrustmaster PC/PS2 (dual-ended cable) pad, where the analogue stick worked for movement, but this time only two of the buttons worked. Button 4 (Triangle) gave me normal-fire and Button 3 (Circle) did what I presume was homing shot - a collection of blue roundish things that homed from enemy to enemy for a little while. Hunting around for the other two fire buttons caused the game to error when I pressed some buttons, popping up an abort/ignore box... ignoring caused the game to malfunction, firing no longer did anything but play sounds.

... any chance of a keyboard-based control config to sidestep these issues?

The game itself looks promising, and I certainly enjoyed the early parts of the stage where normal-shot was fine for taking down the grunt enemies, but after I started getting larger enemies with health bars showing up I was having trouble killing them before they left the bottom of the screen with normal-shot. Is this intentional, or should I have been able to take them down with the other modes of fire I couldn't find joypad buttons for? I found the homing enemies (they looked a bit like cruise missiles?) that come at you from behind a little frustrating, but I wonder whether I missed a cue for them, I didn't have much time to spend on it, unfortunately.

Thank you for the report.

I use 'super joybox3' converter,  i will now work on input keyboard command and pad configuration to avoid those kind of problems.
(it was supposed to work, but seem buggy when i try it before i upload the beta)

About the gameplay, you can kill ALL enemy, if you use correctly all weapons,
Green bonus fill your E-battery gauge, you need E-battery to shoot all secondary weapon.
-Main shoot...
-Homing shoot (usefull on little enemy, it can destroy all little unit on the srceen)
-Piercing shoot (usefull on big enemy, remove 1/4 of life most of time)
-Charge shoot (sort of big Piercing shoot, it can't be stop by little or medium enemies, usefull to destroy more than one medium enemy on the same line)
-Bomb (you need full E-Battery gauge, it remove between 100% to 50% of life on medium and big enemies)

Like in Dragon Blaze you have to make a good use of all weapon and all will become a lot easier.

EDIT : Cheese, finally it was nothing (phew), gamepad configuration work fine now, so i guess you'll can config any 6 buttons pad right now.
So on main menu go to option, the only thing for no is the pad config, when is done you'll get back automatically on main menu with your new config, anyway for now your config can't be saved, i'll begin to work on it tommorrow.

I will upload the correction for pad config in few minutes.

I can't get it to work. I can setup controls just fine, but i can't shoot in game.
BTW: the game looks great, reminds me of Ether Vapor for some reason.

EDIT: after I got hit the game crashed and complained about missing explosion object or something like that. Which also means this game uses Game Maker. How the hell did you get such nice 3D graphics in it? GMIrrlicht?

Very strange...did you get the last version? beta 0.3 (see in readme)
The explosion sprite are hard coded so i don't understand how they can be missing, anyway i try just now and i saw no problem...

Yes i'v do it with game maker, wihtout any dll or Gmirrlicht, most of the models are less than 200 poly ^^' (exception for boss, big cruiser and missile who have 400-500 poly).

I'm happy you like the graphics cause i spent a lot of time for it.

EDIT: i forget to put a dll in the zip, so the pause is bugged (FreeMemory.dll http://www.gamemaker.fr/pages/download/DLL/freememory.zip ) just put the dll on the game directory.

Re: Space Pirate 'entre chien et chat' WIP

YanoSpama,

Sorry for not providing any feedback yet, but here is a rundown of my experiences so far Smiley

How do you change the controls for the controller?  I'm using an XBox 360 controller and the axes are a bit mixed up.  Up/down controls left/right and the shoulder buttons control up/down  Grin  Anyway, I can't comment too much until I get that figured out.

The game seems to be getting a decent 30fps on my laptop, which I think is pretty good given the 3D nature of it and Game Maker as a development tool.  I did want to mention the perspective, though.  You might gain some performance by making it a straight "top-down" look (this might allow less reliance on the 3D library, I don't know, or it might allow for some optimizations).  The perspective you're using is hard to carry off, though I do think that the game looks good despite this.

Looking forward to following this one Smiley

Re: Space Pirate 'entre chien et chat' WIP

@2Bears

If you haven't the version from that newest link , better to download it again,
these one must resolve pad configuration mistake. (tested with ps2,ps3 and work fine).
Anyway since i'm using gamemaker, i know that some adaptator just don't work or work but not normally. I doubt i can do something about it :/

To set your controller  go to option on the main menu, you should go to a new screen with 'press left' text, setting start here. (the others option don't exists yet).

@ Hima/@ Community  I will upload it on another host in a moment.
By the way i will add keyboard command for the main menu at least to avoid you to get mad with your controller (lol).
Be sure i'm still searching a way to input keyboard commands.
(not so easy than it seem ,i probably have to emulate pad with keyboard or something like that).

Thanks guys  Grin

Re: Space Pirate 'entre chien et chat' WIP

OK, I managed to set the controls such that I could move and shoot the regular and homing shots; is it expected that I wouldn't be able to use the charge shot or piercing shot in this version? I assigned buttons to them, but they didn't seem to do anything much...

Also, the controls I set only seemed to work in the game, I still had to use the (odd, on the XBox controller) standard mapping through the menus.

Overall I quite enjoyed the game, more so than before... but still, the number of things which fly at you from behind without warning kind of put me off. I was memorising when I'd have to move away from the bottom of the screen to avoid them, but still I think pretty much all the hits I took the last time I played were from surprise rear attacks.

About those missile coming from behind, they had all warning before, now only the first one draw a Warning sprite and a voice say to you : 'missile approaching on your back', so i will set the warning sprite to all missile again.
Resolved
Those missile contain 'clone launch system', it still active as long as the first Power-up black ship is come.if you destroy a missile before the black power-up he will respawn at same position than fist time...(this allow you to got more points if you kill fast)
Hi Folks!

Well this time i really wish that anyone can try it, keyboard is fully playable, and i guess you can config Xbox360 pad now (ps2,ps3,xbox seem to be ok allready, according with some users on shmup.com).Anyway the keyboard is not configurable yet.

Default keyboard command:
--Direction arrow to move
--Z or W : Main shoot
--X : Homing Shoot
--C: Bot Piercing Shot
--V: Bot Charge shoot
--Space: Bomb
--Enter: Pause/enter name (ranking)

(i'm using azerty keyboard,so these arrow key config is probably not the best for you,
i'll try to make it configurable too in coming week).

Hi, here we go with more screenshots of my last low poly  Smiley

There is the Option Robot that follow your ship everywhere, the Big blue 'eye' is the laser canon.
This laser isn't very effectiv but he kill with a x2 bonus and there is a special attack (smart bomb),
that you can use with a full energy gauge.
(for this model* is a simple large blue beam that can burn half boss life)

* 3 robots will be available, by taking item ingame you can switch to the wanted one.
  Laser type
Homing type ( this robot will target any incoming enemy, by rotating on himself, then shoot straight at the enemy)
  3 way type
