Shmup-dev needs new management

Hi folks, sorry for the recent downtime, shmup-dev ran out of space.  You've probably noticed that I've not been around a lot recently, unfortunately my life has been one hell of a stressful nightmare for the last few months.  I dont really want to go into great details other than to say it has been the most horrible experience of my life watching someone you love destroy themselves and being helpless to stop it.  I got stuck in endless loops were one day she'd be crying to me about how bad things were and would make sense of her situation only to go into complete denial a couple of days later and for things to get worse.  I was desperate to help her and tried everything I could but at the end of the day she was so messed up in the head she just wouldn't help herself.  I got so stressed, worried, and fustrated for so long that in the end I made myself ill, I've lost hair over it and everything.  It's taken a very long time but fortunately things have finaly turned around and she's on the road to recovery.  Sadly though things have changed significantly between us as a result and although we're still good friends it seems we wont be able to go back to what we were.  This whole experience has been very draining and left me badly depressed which I've been fighting my way out of so I appologise for neglecting my duties at shmupdev.

Anyway I've made the decision that the time has come for me to step down as manager of shmupdev and pass the torch onto someone else.  If you are interested in taking over then please pm me and I'll fill you in on the details and answer any questions you have.  In the mean time I will keep the place running and the bills paid until someone takes over.  Something you should bare in mind though if you are interested is that shmupdev is in need of expansion.  We're currently very close to the limit and activity is increasing all the time so please take that into consideration.

Many thanks everyone, I've really enjoyed my time here and will continue to visit.  I look forward to hearing from you potential new owners.

Dan.

Re: Shmup-dev needs new management

I am so sorry to hear about your struggles Motorherp. I may not know exactly how it feels going through what you have been, but I know what its like to love somebody so much and to feel so helpless and frustrated not being able to help them. It is completely understandable that you have not had the time/energy to devote to this place. I think your priorities have been straight. Best of luck to you, and thanks for not giving up. I'm sure some longtime member or admin or someone will be able to take the reigns and take care of everything here.

Re: Shmup-dev needs new management

Sorry to hear about that. :/

I can feel you. As I know how deep one can fall with personal problems. I myself have been suffering years from depression and just reccently started to somewhat recover from that.

She probably really needed your help there. It's pretty cool of you, that you have stayed at her site, even if she was giving you a troubled time. I think you still were a big "pile" that she could hold herself onto, so she wouldn't fall too hard.

And don't worry about shmup-dev, there is a lot of dedication coming from the members. I am sure there will be someone among us who is willing to take over the duties of the administration.

I wish the best of luck to you and your girlfriend.

This is so sad to hear. I really hope everything work out for you in the end, motorherp. Also, I hope that even if you step down, you will still be around...

Sorry to hear that Motorherp.
I was wondering if you were OK and what had happened. It is good to know that you are safe. I'll keep you in my prayers. Just look out for yourself and try to come out on top. You are one of my better friends online, if you ever need to chat about life or blow off some steam I got your back. Smiley

Re: Shmup-dev needs new management

I haven't been able to reach motorherp, if anyone can reach him please point him to this topic.  There's a lot I'd like to do with this website as far as improvements go; and get it up to date with the latest technology.  Also, I'd like to do community polls and gather feedback into a redesign of the forums to make them easier to use.  Lasty, I'd like to start up more competitions, etc.  Anyway, I'm fully prepared to take on financial responsibility and conduct an active management plan that would increase the userbase and functionality.  In the end it's up to motorherp to decide who to hand the torch to, and I wouldn't be devestated if it were somebody else.  I'd just like to see shmup-dev continue and evolve.  Smiley

Re: Shmup-dev needs new management

I tried PMing motorherp a while ago offering to host this forum on the Team Skyfire's(http://www.teamskyfire.com) servers, as a courtesy. I think he's logged in since then, but I haven't received a response.
I hadn't(and still haven't) talked to the rest of the team about it, but it's something I would if whoever decides to manage the forum is in favor of it.

Of course, there are lots of minor and major technicalities involved with the process of moving and hosting the server files to our server, and I understand if you're all not in favor of it.

If we were to host Shmup-Dev through our servers, all we'd ask in return would be affiliation(because we're trying to become known) and a thank you. I'd be more than happy to (help?) organize the next official shmup-dev competition if this were to happen. Although I certainly have no arguments with the Sessions we have going, a full-fledged competition could be fun, and we could end with some more wonderful indie shmups, as has happened in the past.

@Matt:
Maybe we could collaborate to refurbish and revitalize the Shmup-Dev community? If all are in favor, I don't see why not.

Re: Shmup-dev needs new management

After much discussion, we(TeamSkyfire) seem to be in favor of the idea.

Re: Shmup-dev needs new management

I had both emailed and pm'ed Motorherp about a month and a half ago about either hosting the forum on my server or integrating it into the forums over on shmuptacular.com but I never heard back from him.  In light of the starter message in this thread, I really hope everything is ok.

But you've got my vote Matt- I'd love to see you revitalize the site.

I don't think Motorherp will mind.
I found something to help you.

Well if you ever want to take the wheel again just say.  Not that I want to jump ship or anything but this is originaly your place after all.

Anyway, this is the way I've always visioned it to work.  The site owner, ie the person footing the bill, is the only one who can have access to everything behind the scenes such as the server control panel etc, since to share this would mean sharing the server account details.  I'm sure you can see why that wouldn't be a good idea for me or the security of this place.  Hence this is the only person able to make the most fundamental and major modifications to the site.  This is what I refered to as having the wheel.  Any admins on the other hand have access to enough stuff to be able to effectively run the place, therefore any admin runs the place just as much as I do if they take it upon themselved to do so.  If Matt or yourself even wants to take things into their own hands to steer the course of this site, whether that's moderation, setting up compos, etc etc, then you've been entrusted to do so.  In that respect every admin has the 'wheel' but only as much as they're willing to take.  I'm more that happy for Matt or yourself to take as much 'share' in this place as you want, that is after all why you're admins, but its up to you to take it.
