Re: To All Participants!

I'm really into that graphical style. Have you played Wiebo's demo yet? Look in the WIP forum I think...

Yes, Wiebo's Geo War is pretty sweet! (Although I'm rubbish at it  Tongue)
Actually, it was playing his game which started me thinking about how to implement the glowing style, and so I thought I'd try it out for this compo.

Re: To All Participants!

I'm rubbish at it too.

So is you game similar to Wiebo's in gameplay, or just in graphics? If both were finished and polished would there be a point to play both?

Just graphics - the gameplay is a horizontal scroller with pre-scripted enemy waves and no rotation of the player's craft. (You always point right and fire right, though in the screenshot I'm using spread-fire)
And it's going to have a buzz/scrape system to encourage living dangerously (although I haven't finalised the exact details of the mechanics yet)
So it shouldn't really play anything like Geometry Wars/Geo Wars! (Except in that it's a shooter, of course)

Maybe there's a more common name for it, I don't know...
But what I mean is where you get some advantage for going close to (but obviously not touching) enemy bullets.
Examples:
Psyvariar makes this one of its primary mechanics, where your ship levels up for 'buzzing' enough enemies/enemy bullets.
Shikigami no Shiro (I think the English title is "Castle of Shikigami") gives you more points for killing things if you're in more danger (i.e. closer to more bullets).
I've seen similar things in various shareware/freeware shooters too, but I can't think of any names off the top of my head.

Re: To All Participants!

That's not one I've come across but it sounds a good idea. Look forward to trying it out.

Re: To All Participants!

Shikigami no Shiro = 式神の城 = 式(shiki) 神(kami) の(no) 城(shiro)

"Shiro" here means "castle". "Shikigami" does not appear in my dictionary, but the individual characters themselves translate to "[ritual][god/soul]", so it probably means "divine ritual". Or it's probably a proper noun.

The game itself is a rich title featuring multiple characters posessing very different attacks, and hence very (very very) different playstyles. If you fly very close to bullets, your shots will be of a powered up version.

Shikigami no Shiro 2 has been released to the North American world under the awfully awful title, "Mobile Light Force 2". If you want the game in its unadulterated format, best get the Japanese version.

In Psyvariar 2, levelling up by buzzing gives you momentary invincibility. Furthermore, selecting the Buzz Type mecha enables a player to defeat enemies without ever firing. There are superplay videos on the web; be sure to view them if you're interested.

So there... today's useless trivia. Grin
