ProtoType - by X-0ut

Some people may have issues with the game not starting up.
This could be because of the use of pbuffers, before discarding please try
disabling them in the engine.cfg using PBuffers   = 0

All my games run best with vsync enabled, I leave this open to you, I will not touch your
refresh rate. You can however, disable vsync in the cfg if you desire.

There are some other little things you may also tweak there if you wish.
I'm defaulting to Windowed mode, but you can use Fullscreen. See engine.cfg
I have targeted a GF3 as minimum, but who knows maybe it will work on older machines, I would
appreciate some feedback on that. At a minimum I would recommend a 32mb Gfx card with opengl
support.

You may use a joystick- its not required, but will surely help improve the game quality.

Music was picked up off the internet and can only be used for non commercial products!
Respect to the author(s) of them.

Default controls are:

ArrowPad | d-pad       :       Control ship
Z | jbutton3           :       Primary Fire  (Shoot)
X | jbutton4           :       Secondary Fire (To control PowerUp orbs rotation)

Controls can be configured from the main page.

Game related instructions can be found in-game, look out for tips/cheats/bonuses.
Hope You enjoy!

...
Ok so many people have complained its too difficult, so I've added shields to the easy and medium
settings, this will only defend you against scrapes with weak bullets and enemies.

Re: ProtoType - by X-0ut

For those that where interested, I've uploaded the C++ src code.
This requires the unofficial SDL 1.3 branch, which can be found from http://www.libsdl.org/pipermail/sdl/2003-November/057847.html

Extract into a folder, as it is not inside one. Warning my make your eyes bleed.

Nice to see you releasing the source code.  I'm a fan of opensource, though I prefer the approach of "if you want to open it fine, if not, that's ok too".  Once I find the time I am interested in looking at it... it's been years since I touched C/C++ and I'm trying to get back into it recently for GBA/DS and DC homebrew.  'Sides, I always like looking at other's techniques.

Bill

Open the engine.cfg and Set Fullscreen to 1. I'm wondering why windowed is the default

Re: ProtoType - by X-0ut

The reason for default windowed  was that a lot of people where complaining about adjusting monitor refresh rates and resolution etc etc.
So I took a safe approach and just simply  used whatever refresh rate the user had, and didnt tinker with fullscreen.
But yeah it can be set from the engine cfg, theres some other stuff that can be changed too - nothing drastically changing the game though.

Congratulations on taking first prize, X-0ut.  It's well deserved!  *two thumbs up*

Re: ProtoType - by X-0ut

Congrats X-Out!  Prototype is a pure gold.  I loved that you chose to emulate Pulstar, a rare arcade treasure.  The source code to your prize winning game is also a treasure.  This is especially generous, considering this game is very worthy of becoming a commercial product.

Prototype has exactly all the elements I want in my next game, and I am studying it very closely. I've learned a lot already, but it would be good to know your terms in case I or someone else lift some of your code into another project.

Re: ProtoType - by X-0ut

X-0ut, I GOTTA congratulate you on such a grand-class piece of work called ProtoType, and you kept me well into the game more deeply than ever, too (which I found to be quite a pleasant surprise as well!!  Wink ).

At first, when I started this game at the medium difficulty setting, I found this game to be too plain hard for me.  But then days later, I came back to the game and tried the easier setting and to my surprise, I found the game to be well-balanced in its difficulty curve, and I even made it to the boss (I have not beaten him yet, but it takes some good practice and skills to bring him down, believe me!).  I actually stood a real fighting chance!!  That is quite the main attraction of the game for me right there, it turns out!!!

Overall, I loved this game, and I believe this 1st place award for the first Shmup-Dev competition is well-deserved myself, you know?  Congratulations once again!!!  d=Grin=b !
