FAQ

Q) Can the Main Character be something that transforms from Dragon to human or anything else?
A) As long as the Main Character is played as a Dragon in the game that is fine, your story can be whatever you wish!

Q) Can I make a platform game like Metal Slug or Contra?
A) No, in the game you must be either flying left or right, or it can be top-down walking left or right OR something like that.  I would stay away from anything remotely close to Mario Bros / Sonic the Hedgehog, Contra, Metal Slug, Abuse, etc, etc, etc.

Q) Do we have to have scrolling, if so, where and when?
A) Scrolling is NOT required in this Competition, if you do include scrolling it may be in any direction.  There are no restrictions or requirements for this game mechanic.

Q) How many levels do I need?  Does the game have to be complete?
A) All you need is a working demo of the game that includes at least one level.

Q) Do I need to have a BOSS in this one?
A) You don’t need one, but if you do that is OKAY!

Q) Can I rip graphics from a commercial game?
A) All graphics must be ORIGINAL, please see the rules.  This site does not promote any illegal activity and ripping graphics is copy right infringement!

Q) What are the judges looking for in graphics or sound or gameplay?

A) Everything will be judged, including Technical, Game-play, sound, graphics, originality, and OVERALL.  All of these things will be based on the judges’ opinions and not yours, or your friends, mother, brother, or any other party not given the position as a judge.  Judges will also be judging games on how they FEEL about it overall, and that will determine who gets the prizes.

Q) Does it have to be 20 megs?
A) No 20 megs is the limit, if the DOWNLOAD itself is larger than 20 megs it will be disqualified.

Q) Is it 20 megs zipped or unzipped?
A) IT really depends on the DOWNLOAD.. If your download is 19 megs zipped and then the game itself is 40 megs unzipped you are OKAY.  It's all about the download size and nothing else.

Q) What programming language can I use?
A) Any programming language, SDK, engine, Game Editor, etc is allowed in this contest.  As long as the game works without needing to download 3rd party software that needs PURCHASED you are OK.  Please make sure that you tell the us what software we need to play your game (if we need a special driver, etc)

Q) Do I have to be in a team?
A) Nope!

Q) Can I be an artist on my friends game and do my own game?
A) Yes, you can.

Q) Can I have keyboard / mouse / gamepad control?
A) You can use all three if you want.  You WILL lose points if it is a gamepad / joystick ONLY game.  I would recommend keyboard OR mouse control WITH a gamepad option.  BUT just keyboard or JUST mouse is ok, it all matters how it works with your game really.

Q) What are the System Requirements?
A) Please review the “System Requirements” Section.

Re: FAQ

Here are some questions for when I have a shot at entering this new compo, Matt.

1) I can make the entry so as for the human/humanlike being to transform into a dragon.  And then, all during gameplay, the character remains as dragon throughout the whole entire game.  Then at the ending/closing credits screen, the dragon can transform back into a human/humanlike being again.  Is it ok for me to do all of that?  Smiley !

2) Can you allow an entry to be vertically scrolling or just horizontal?  Or, can you manually scroll in any direction (even *while* having auto-scrolling in a fixed horizontal/vertical direction, ala Dragon Blaze or Dragon Saber)?

3) If a vertically scrolling shmup entry is allowed here, then while my main aim is to make it so the player can see the screen easily, can I add a TATE mode as well (in which the player can turn his/her monitor to its side just 90 degrees, thus granting a true arcade experience)?

Thanks so much in advance, and this competition sounds *really* interesting already!  BRING IT ON!!!  Wink

Re: FAQ

Hey! To answer the scrolling question, the SHMUP you develop can be scrolling in any direction you want, or not scrolling at all!  I have also answered ther Human/Dragon thing in the main FAQ.

Re: FAQ

Q) Can it be free scrolling left or right?
A) Yes, you can switch the scrolling effect left or right in your game, or NOT EVEN SCROLL AT ALL!!!!!

Q) Does my game have to scroll in a direction forcibly?
A) No, the scrolling may be dependant on the character but there must be a scrolling mechanic in the game.

 Huh?

Q) Do I have to be in a team?
A) You may employ anyone to provide services for your development.  However, only one person can get the prizes.  Therefore, the person who gets the prizes will be the one who submits the game, and is the team leader.
only one person can get the prizes?!?! So the team cant split the prizes?? huh1 That is stupid.

EDIT: Thanks Matt!  Wink

Re: FAQ

Only the team leader gets the prizes, this is to encourage one man teams, etc.   The guy can employ artists, etc if they want to take part.

EDIT: Changed, Teams can divide prizes.

Re: FAQ

What if somewhere along the line of creating my game I decide to make it a commercial product?  Would a very full featured demo be acceptable, or are you looking for a full game?

Um, just a question...but is a game with a dragon in a Zelda like game ok, where as he uses fire balls and lightning strikes to attack instead of close range combat? Is this ok for this comp?

EDIT: Also, enemies are in the are, so you would have to look up and down to find enemies (or lock on...)

Yeah that's ok, as it would be like an arena shooter correct?

Re: FAQ

It's a bit like that...but with a hint of adventure...to add to a story line that makes you want to play more...nothing makes a good game like a really good story line. I'll post a screen shot of what I mean (as in a demo pic of what I have so far as a basic consept.

Ok, that sounds like it will fit in this competition so far.  as long as you're shooting stuff and it is close to the shmup side.  Including adventure/rpg elements are alright.  It was nice to see that done by xaver in our last compo.

Yes graphics can be either 2D or 3D for this contest.  Something like Panzer Dragoon / Starfox would be ok here.

Re: FAQ

Hi,

Something quick and probably obvious Smiley... when you say the graphics need to be original, do you mean each person entering as to have come up with their own graphics (from scratch) for the whole game? Or, could we find free/open graphics that someone else has come up with, and use them (assuming permission etc.)?

Cheers Smiley

Re: FAQ

Yeah, but what if the artist doesnt want to release his/her copyright for his/her art but since the artist is in the team he doesnt mind it being used, or the art is licensed for use but isnt copyrighted.  Ya know?

Lots of technical things with that simple statement there that can cause confusion.  Right now the rules state that entrants must have permissions / ownership to the media.  I think that is good enough, but of course, if it isnt, I will add more to the rules.

Your thoughts?

No one can implicitly give up copyright by submitting the game to this contest.  As long as there's nothing signed saying "Shmup-Dev" gets the rights then everyone is fine.  For the sake of common sense put a copyright notice in your distribution files as these games will leak out all over the web once done.

Simply put, shmup-dev makes the rules and might publish the game, but doesn't have a copyright on the game or to the portions within the contestants' games that are shaped by the rules.
A statement something like that for the rules.   Smiley

Other than the use of the contest requirements, theme and rules, there is the use of permitted materials not made by team volunteers.  I think that is covered by one of the contest rules already.  Smiley
I think it's good that the rules specify that the team volunteers need permission for non public domain stuff.  Smiley

Credit Requirements...

Um, what are the Credit Requirements for when you get music off of ModArchive and other stuff in the art section (images, music, sound, models, etc)? I don't intend to make a mistake and get my game disqualified due to doing my credits incorrectly.

Will this do?

CREDITS

--Music--
-Site-
Title - Artist

--Models--
-Site-
Artist

--Textures\Sprites--
Image(EX:grass) - Site

Re: FAQ

You can provide your credits in many shapes and forms.  As long as you provide to the judges from whom you received the music from (their name are sufficient) then we should be happy.  However, if there is suspicion, we may ask you their email address etc.

If you received the music from a website, using the website is NOT sufficient (mod archive) we want the authors, and I believe everyone here knows that mod archive is not an author itself, but just a website.

You should always honor anyone who has contributed to your project.  If you have multiple artists then you must list their names to avoid disqualification.

If you do have one guy doing textures, and one guy doing models, it would be sufficient to do "Artists: (texture Artist Name) , (model Artist Name)" : However, you might consider breaking them down to provide less confusion and to meet the requirements of your (license, appl) agreements with the authors.

Some Authors require that you do provide explicitally what they did for you, and if so, please honor them.

The purpose of requiring credit in this competition is because I, this website, and the sponsors of this competition do not condone or promote illegal or disrespectful behavior towards contributors in the process of Game Development.

Re: FAQ

A quick question: my wife and I are both game developers, can we both enter a game? I know this gets fishy because you can't tell if one person is submitting under two names, etc. so I can understand if the answer is no, but just wanted to know if we can work on our own separate titles or if we should work on one better one together.
