What is Dungeons and Dragons?

Hm, well, guess this fits with previous questions Smiley

I'm mainly wondering, how close must it be? Can I have my own elements, or it definitly must be a reptile dragon in the middle ages and wizards around?

So like, if I want to make a game with a mechanical dragon flying around in space, that means I'm out of the compo?

Re: What is Dungeons and Dragons?

Yeah pretty much, a science fiction based dragon really wouldnt fit in a midievil theme.  You would have to adjust your game a bit.  Also, I said vaguely (key word here) represents something from D&D, NOT something from D&D.

Yeah, it MUST be a reptile of some sort!!!  But you could add in all kidns of elements to the reptile dragon, like it shoots lasers out of it's eyes, or perhaps it shoots tornadoes from a special wing flapping technique.  The sky is the limit, just use your imagination! Cheesy

I have updated the rules to help further.

Re: What is Dungeons and Dragons?

I was thinking of giving this one a go - 'Dragons' sounded pretty good - but limiting it to a fantasy setting pretty much rules out the solo programmers that haven't got great art skills...

Hmmm...  'something from D&D...' - lots of N-sided dice?  Grin

Re: What is Dungeons and Dragons?

Why not dragons in space?  I originally thought the dragon theme a little restricting, but requiring a medieval setting?  Seems a little too much IMO.  What about "vector-based dragons in an abstract environment?"... nope!  One of the strengths of the last competition's entries was the diversity of games.

Re: What is Dungeons and Dragons?

I agree with 2bear's point there, the medieval theme is avoiding the variety of entries. I am ok with the fantasy setting, but I am sure some would prefer to have a sci-fi dragon theme.
How about only limiting to a organical dragon (no dragon spaceship), but the setting is up to the entrant.
That's at least my opinion. Smiley

Re: What is Dungeons and Dragons?

Something like Reign of Fire but from the dragons POV would be quite cool. You could fight off modern day soldiers, tanks and helicopters.

There weren't too many flying vehicles in medieval times, so the choices for enemies are quite limited.

Re: What is Dungeons and Dragons?

Yeah, fantasy\medieval does kind of suck.  It means you can't make  Cyvern clone without breaking the theme.  I'm assuming this rules out fantasy sci-fi combinations, so you couldn't put your dragons in a fantasy universe with equal sci-fi elements (something like Rifts or Shadowrun.)

I was thinking about making an asian themed game with Chinese dragons.  Does this fit the theme or does it have to be European style?

Re: What is Dungeons and Dragons?

Chinese dragons are ok, also the world has to be earthy but could be ANY earth like setting also not planet earth but something that represents being on a planet (I just picked earthy as I thought that described it best)  so yeah 2 moons etc is ok, purple skies yep ok.. etc etc.

Also.. you can combine sci-fi with it, as long as the dragon is itself organic and there are somewhat medival overtones. Final fantasy did this well, as well as many anime fantasy contraptions.

hope this helps,
Matt

Re: What is Dungeons and Dragons?

Thanks.  My question about the sci-fi elements is basically how far can it go?  I read the FAQ, it makes sense that you can't have a pure sci-fi game with a mecha dragon, but could you do something like Cyvern with cybernetic dragons?  Can you have modern enemies like tanks or jets?

Re: What is Dungeons and Dragons?

I gotta totally agree with Matt myself on the whole fantasy/medieval setting.  I have *absolutely* no problems with it whatsoever.  Wink

Hey, I got something for all of you aspiring new entrants of this compo, so listen up!  I know of an excellent example to help you follow the compo rules plain and clear: Dragon Blaze, the BEST Psikyo fantasy-based shmup that has ever been released in the Japanese arcades from back in 2000.  That should give you some truly radical pointers, wouldn’t you say now?  Cool !  Check on this KLOV entry of it right here and you will see what I mean.

Just wanted to throw some clear help in so that none’ll get confused, you know?  Thanks so much for your wonderful time!!

Yeah you could have modern tanks and jets but make sure that the settting doesnt seem like its a modern era, but more ofa  fantasy era.   IE: mixing mideval elements would do well there.  Like still castles etc, but with modern stuff, or mages etc..

Re: What is Dungeons and Dragons?

The Midievil requirements have been lifted because it is highly graphically intensive, although it is welcomed.  Also, I changed the rules regarding the theme a bit I suggest you look at it now..
