Clean Asia (Featured on GameTrailers.com!)

CLEAN ASIA!

News: The game was recently featured on mainstream gaming website GameTrailers.com, with 1800 views already!

The eyes of mankind has decided to leave their hosts and take over the earth. Their first move was to escape to the moon, where they developed their hostile weapon technology. Ten years later they return and forcefully take over some prominent countries in Asia. Thailand and New Korea has both succumb to the hostile threat, while China insists on dealing with the eyes themselves and refuses any helping hands from around the world.

America sends a pair of pilot twins with extroardinary sixth senses to battle against the evil eyes. They both have designed their own space ships that seems to be about the only thing in existance that can be used to battle these terrible fiends.

TITLE SCREEN

THAILAND LEVEL

NEW KOREA LEVEL

CHINA LEVEL

It has three levels and two selectable ships (with distinct controlling differencies and weapons/abillities), fourteen bosses and around ten regular enemies.

I haven't bugtested it thuroughly so that might be a problem. The China level is nearly unbeatable, I haven't even gotten to the boss myself, so that's probably where any bugs would show up. I've tested the boss a lot, though, so it might be fine.

I've worked my butt off on this damn game, so you better like it  Angry

Mirror2: http://www.mediafire.com/?82dymv2dyim

This file may be updated if I find any bugs after the deadline... Or something. So I guess judges should get the attachment instead Tongue

Welcome aboard cactus! Hehe, we really should make another random plant generator. Anyways did you use my Bullet Hell GML engine or did you code this differently?

I guess I should release a demo soon, these screenshots don't do the game justice. But I won't  Angry

Re: Ad Nauseam

Hooray, I've finally got enough to release a solid demo... Grin

What's in it:
-Profile creator (profile isn't saved yet)
-A sexy menu (only start and quit work so far)
-Five powerups
-Two cool songs (by Lizardking and Paledeth)
-Seven enemies
-Lots of sexy graphic
-Some sound effects (more will be added)

FIRST DEMO DOWNLOAD (1,5 meg)

The difficulty curve is heavily unbalanced in the demo, the enemies appear at random. This will be altered in the final version, don't worry.

Wow that was weird. In a good way.
It's a bit hard but you already stated that you'll work on it so it's fine.
Keep it up :)

Maybe you shouldn't change the resolution.
Messes up the windows and -for some people- the desktop icons.

By the way: Both, Lizardking and PaleDeth have uploaded music on modarchive.com.
So you can include Paledeth in your post there ;)

Re: Ad Nauseam (now with demo)

Yeah, I will make the resolution change optional (and not default). I know people hate that, but the game looks much better when it isn't stretched or windowed Tongue

I found PaleDeth's e-mail adress (I hope he still uses it), so yeah. Lizardking has for some reason only included his home adress... I guess I'll have to write him a letter if all else fails. We even live in the same country, so it wouldn't be that much of a bother.

I'm glad you liked it, I'm a fan of both Edge and Hyper Wars. I hope your Epileptica Forte will be as good as those, although I must say that I don't appreciate the style you have chosen as much as the styles your previous games has had. But screenshot can be deceptive, and I trust your skills.

Re: Clean Asia (Ad Nauseam scrapped)

I've got two out of three stages completely done, as well as everything except for highscores and scoring. So, I should definitely be able to submit a full version with no/few bugs on the 31st.

The game will have about ten smaller enemies, 14 regular bosses and one mega boss that will take you guys ages to beat. I've never spent this much time on a game before, and I hope it won't have been in vain.

I bet you were expecting further teasers, right? Ha ha! None for you  Angry

Re: Clean Asia (FINISHED!)

This. is. great! Awesome job guys. Love the music and the visual style. The controls may not have been the most intuitive ones but after a few trial runs it worked out just fine. There's one feature I'd like to see added though: selectable windowed mode / fullscreen. I had trouble with the fullscreen as it messed my running vnc session and the game was hard to play with the taskbar sitting over the bottom part of the screen. Not sure why this happened but still, a possibility to select a windowed mode would be nice. Command line trigger, perhaps?

Anyway, love it. Definitely a keeper.

Re: Clean Asia (Featured on GameTrailers.com!)

Congrats, although this annoyed me -> "Genres: Action".  Action?? What a cop-out.  I hate that lable as it says absolutely nothing about the type of gameplay involved.  Its just the catagory reviewers through games into when they dont have a clue or cant be arsed thinking about it.  For example Tomb Raider comes under action as well, but if you walked into a games shop and asked for a copy of Clean Asia would you expect them to say "Sorry we dont have that in stock at the moment, but if you're into that kind of game I've heard Tomb Raider is pretty good".  Imagine how annoyed you'd be if you got that home and whacked it into your computer expecting a substitute for Clean Asia.  Sorry for the rant, just one of my pet hates.

Re: Clean Asia (Featured on GameTrailers.com!)

Yeah, but in their defence I have to say that the graphics look pretty crummy in the video. The outlined bits didn't survive the squished video size very well. I'm still happy, though. It was totally unexpected that they'd put a trailer up for my game. And it's gotten 5500 hits and over 50 comments already!

Too bad they didn't put up a download link and whatnot, I hadn't updated my site with any news for a while, but I did as soon as I found out about how much exposure I was getting. Hopefully, some of the traffic will show up here as well  grin2

Re: Clean Asia (Featured on GameTrailers.com!)

I couldn't finish one single level because it is hard as hell but I like the style of it.
The player is a bit small and oftenly covered by the hud and if there are 100 parts of metal floating around you and the enemy shoots craploads of white bullet dots at your white ship which also is a dot it's not easy to keep track on where you actually are.
Also the 'warning, only ... ships left' message takes a bit too long to dissappear, 1 second should be fine here and you should be invulnerable a bit longer after reviving, 3 seconds should work.

Asides from that it's a nice though hard game that I am sure to keep on my harddrive.
Good job and good luck in the competition. I can imagine you won't do too bad with that ;)

WOW!!!  d=Grin=b

And GREAT music, too... surely one of the best I have ever heard out of any game in this competion!!!  Cool !

With the ship that blasts around when you press Z.  The blast itself can destroy peices of the enemy and then you hold X and grab the parts.  Then Z shoots the parts at them and its quite fun.

Re: Clean Asia (Featured on GameTrailers.com!)

Thanks for the comments everyone! I'm really glad to be getting so much positive feedback.

Since at least two people have beaten the game (one of them said the game was "Too easy"), and even nearly beaten it with both pilots, the game is indeed completable. It takes a lot of practice and skill, though.

The people who have beaten China reported some bugs that I didn't notice (since I never managed to get to the end of it myself). And I have now fixed those issues in the unofficial download link. Hopefully there is no bugs left, and the game is finally final. But if you get any errors, or spot any weird behaviour... Do let me know  Wink

Does freezing and crashing XP count? Sad
I finally got around to trying Clean Asia on my main desktop box (Athlon XP 1700+, 768megs of ram, GF2mx400, E-Mu 0404) and I hate to say this but I just couldn't get it to run. Not the compo version nor the new final version. This is a real shame as Clean Asia runs just fine on my laptop and is an excellent game. I really can't even try to pinpoint the cause of this by the behaviour as when I run the game, it opens the tab at the task bar, flashes it and then.. um.. makes windows crawl for a few seconds and then freezes. Keyboard stops responding, even the reset functionality of ATX stops working so a cold shutdown and reboot is the only way to get the box back on it's feet. The first program to ever kill my XP. Cheesy

Oh well, no can do I guess. Love it anyway. :3

Re: Clean Asia (Featured on GameTrailers.com!)

Yeah, sounds like your computer doesn't like Game Maker games... Or it doesn't like the resolution change. Try manually changing the resolution to 640 x 480 before playing and then start the game. That is quite a low tech solution, but the only one I could think of.

Re: Clean Asia (Featured on GameTrailers.com!)

Actually, the China level IS easy, if you're playing with the Reflector. Since the gameplay with the Reflector consists mainly of switching between invincibility and shooting, the reflector is the choice that promotes patience. The Attractor on the other hand promotes skill, surgical precision and higher scores.

Re: Clean Asia (Featured on GameTrailers.com!)

BigBossSNK:

The reflector is easy yes, but first few times I beat the China stage I didn't use it except for on the boss after I lost my first ship (otherwise it would be too much of a hazzle to regain the energy stock). Going through the whole stage while using reflector awards a LOL from me because that would be very very boring and non-intuitive Smiley .

And about that, Mr. Gamemaker! Some comments:
The second ship is a little too powerful on the china stage, even without the reflector.
Altough I at first didn't use the "release energy"-weapon, when I tried using it I found that it was too powerful in clearing away everything on the screen, so if I want to play against the boss I use it on the stage to make it almost impossible to die on the regular enemies in the stage. On the other stages, I didn't find it too powerful because you get less energy there.

I actually haven't tried the first ship much on the china stage yet tongue2 , will have to do that now, but I want to say that I think it's a nice idea to have these two completely different ships.

All in all, I liked playing on the China stage but the randomness in how the enemy moves in the other stages didn't suit me, since it takes away many strategic options and just makes me fly around avoiding (or, sometimes, not avoiding Wink ) the projectiles until I can get a clean shot and bombard the ships lol..
Sometimes, depending on how the enemies choose to move, the Thailand/Korea stages are very easy, and sometimes they make it very hard for you. But, "luckily", with the reflector you can turtle up for a while and win the stages that way if you want to, but since it takes too much time there is no prestige in that, it's better to just start over to get a better completion time I think. But it's good for those who really have trouble and really want to beat the stages, so the shield is a good mechanic imo.

Aside from the game play-aspects, I also like the graphics and the music more on the China stage.
One thing that annoyed me is that it takes a long time for the ship to reappear after dieing, and also after game over when entering the main "menu". A "restart" or "back to menu" option rather than just esc-key = quit game would be nice too, but maybe there is more to it and I just haven't found the right buttons to press?  Huh?

Two more things: I really don't like how the text in the lower right corner makes it so much harder to see the bullets and the ship, and I _really_ don't like how you can't shoot bullets and fly down and to the left at the same time... Maybe many keyboards can handle that, but it IS a classical problem that shouldn't exist in this day and age! Easily solved by adding an option to change the buttons to the players choosing, which I personally would like to see very much.

To conclude with my personal opinion on your game, I think that it is too much "arcade style" for me. I want a little more planning and having to study the patterns to be able to beat it, and although I also like bullet dodging I didn't find that aspect here that exciting except against the China boss which I did like a lot, EXCEPT for the randomness in how he flies of course :] .
Also, I don't feel the longevity of the game when I play. I've had a few hours of playing and that is fine, but the way I played it didn't evolve very much after I first found out how I should play, and I feel the game doesn't have a very advanced balance or difficulty curve. All in all, I think you've done a good job on many aspects of the game, but unfortunately I'm not sure if I'll give you my vote this time. You've done good but can do better!

Best of regards,
/Bob

EDIT, BUG: On China stage with the attractor ship, one of the bigger ships (that is on the far left, with another to the far right, (right before four small bullet spraying ships appear, and after those ships four rocket launching ships appear) that shoots out "coloured" bullets left two behind when dieing. This happened to me twice, but only with the attractor ship. They are hanging to the left of the screen, and are still lethal I assure you Wink .

Re: Clean Asia (Featured on GameTrailers.com!)

Sorry about the bug, BigBoss! It's been taken care of. I actually made a "big" update to the game to make it more comfortable for the player to use. Unfortunately no key configuration (yet) Tongue

Latest Update:
-You can go back and forth in the menu now
-You can go back and choose a different pilot between completing missions without them being reset (I think Wink )
-Quitting can only be done on the title screen
-Pressing enter after losing a ship will make you respawn faster
-Pressing enter while the credits roll will make them fade out
-Player Two spawns with 200 debris to make dying slightly less frustrating. This is something people might dislike, but the game doesn't really get a lot easier. Besides it was originally intended for playing as the first pilot only. The second pilot was added to make sure that people who suck at the game (or couldn't get used to playing as Pilot One) could also enjoy Clean Asia!. The pilots are not supposed to be on the same difficulty level.

Bugs fixed:-No immobile enemy bullets that stay behind and cause trouble
-Pilot Two's energy release had a small bug
-The drawing of Pilot Two's debris display also had a small bug

I might also write a manual or implement a tutorial and fix some kind of intro for the game. But that's about it.

Please download using the unofficial download link in the first post, or on my site.

Good job, seems like you 've really streamlined the process there. And the game is actually somewhat easier now, since you can pick up debree that the 3 second pause prevented you from. In any case, I really enjoy the whole "scalpel" gameplay of the attractor. Did you have any inspiration for that, or was it an original idea?

Well, I guess I got inspired from having played other games that features the "Run fast into thing to break it"-concept that is present in a few platformers. But I haven't heard of it being used in a shoot 'em up before Smiley (so it's semi-original, I suppose).

I'm glad you like the game, despite some of it going against the ways of the established Shoot 'Em Up-experts.

If you ever come up with a 100% completely original idea that no one has ever thought of before I will be incredibly impressed Smiley.

Great game, the whole ambience is crazy. I suck badly at it, though.

I really like how you break things and attempt to experiment with different ideas. I must admit that I find the controls in your games to be, more often than not, against the player, which is a big no-no in my book. I still play them like crazy somehow.

Not exactly the same, but it works in a very similar way.

._. At the moment, I can't figure out how to play this game Cheesy  It's okay though, I'll figure it's controls out eventually.  I can't seem to figure out how to collect this debri that "x" is supposed to let me get.  Yes, I read the control list.

I will live forever, or die trying >_<;;
